My Thoughts On: Celebrity Deaths

I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring on this topic because with four down (Ed McMahan, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, Billy Mays) it seems like there might be a plague upon the entertainment world! And apparently bad things come in threes, so should we be expecting two more...?

First point I'd like to make is how unfortunate it is that Michael Jackson died the same day as Farrah Fawcett. Do you remember when Mother Teresa died? No? That's because it was five days after the death of Princess Diana. And her death was much more publicized. Now, I'm not comparing Farrah Fawcett to Mother Teresa... just saying.

How about Groucho Marx? He was a comedy legend, but he passed away a mere 3 days after Elvis Presley. Who do you think got more press? So, it's unfortunate when an iconic figure dies, but is overshadowed by the death of a "more famous" person.

My second point is about the huge difference in how people are talking about Michael Jackson. You go from seeing story after story that detail the legacy of his music, of his fame, of his mega superstardom. Then, you read comments people have posted online about how they don't understand why we would be honoring a pedophile.

Well, I don't know if he was a pedophile or not- no one invited me to that party. Do I think he was troubled? Yes. He didn't have a childhood. He was forced into the spotlight, worked his little feet off and had a jerk of a father. That would leave any adult with issues! So, perhaps since he didn't have a childhood, he was stuck in a little boy phase when he could finally have one as an adult.

I was never a fan of his just because he seemed creepy and his music was a little over the top for me. Sure, I like Billie Jean, Thriller, I mean, I am human. But for the most part, I wasn't a fan. But, I am defending him because he was found innocent and you have to admit the guy was probably messed up in the head. (But I do believe OJ was guilty- so being found innocent isn't always a guarantee you really are innocent!)

Anyway, that's my two cents! Hope it was worth your while!

  2. Great post. I am a huge fan so I'm not coming at it in exactly the same frame of mind. But I do agree, we do not know what happened.
I also agree about the "less" famous getting over shadowed. That is sad, they should all have their due mourning.
    Thanks for this post!

  3. I thought the same thing when MJ died only a few hours after Farrah. She had a long, hard struggle, and the "celebration of her life" definitely got overshadowed.

I was shocked about Billy Mays. My husband and I became huge fans of his new show "Pitchmen" and are actually behind on the episodes (all recorded on our DVR) and it was weird watching one of them last night knowing he was gone.

  4. Glad you gals agree! I had a friend who comment on FB and questioned whether Farrah was an "icon" but I think she was considered a legend in her own right.

  5. Hey Cara,

I feel like Farrah Faucet did get robbed when Michael passed way. She was sort of put on the back burner. As for celebrating a pedophiles death..that isn't what I'm doing. See, I came to terms a long time ago that Michael Jackson died. Once he started creating himself as male version of Joan Rivers. I mourn the loss of black Michael Jackson and his early career. The MJ that just passed away I'm not sure I'm mourning his loss to much.
I just spilled my two cents too! lol

  6. Michael Jackson was a creature of the mass media in life, and now he's one in death. We are getting 24-hour news bulletins about Jackson and his family, to the exclusion of all other news. The Jackson family lives a few blocks from me, and the streets are blocked off by dozens of media vans with giant satellite dishes.

If we're not grieving, we're being made to feel that we should be because the media has turned this death of an aging, rather bizarre rock star into the event of the century. Jackson WAS great. Then he became simply weird. With the shape that the world is in today, it is beyond belief that our media thinks this subject deserves the coverage they're giving it.

When a well-known celebrity dies it makes us sad because we associate that person with a part of our lives. But to deify them and go through this kind of mass mourning is pathetic.

  7. I've been feeling the same about MJ. I am a fan, though he'd become beyond odd in his later years, but I'm not devastated by his passing. I felt like it was a release for him. He wasn't happy. I don't know if he ever was. He had talent. He also had huge problems.

As for the charges of pedophilia, I have to wonder. I wasn't there. I'm not going to judge.

I'm enjoying your articles, Cara! I always read them, even if I don't always comment:)

  8. It does seem awfully hypocritical of the media to be deifying him when a few years back they were implying he was a pedophile.

Let the man and his family rest in peace, I say! No media circus necessary.

  9. I completely agree, I feel bad for the guy, but I do not think it is in any way fair that his death supersedes Farrah's.
It's like they are making one death seem inferior and it's not right.
