I wanted to share this chart that I have referred to for years whenever I wonder what doctors recommend for nap/sleep amounts in children. I have had several issues with my kids' daycare because my daughter abhors naptime there. They have 2 hours of naptime each day and every child has to lie down for those 2 hours. I understand the workers deserve breaks, but as a parent, I don't want my child to be forced to do something I don't believe in... anyway, here is the chart I refer to. Are you surprised by any of the amounts? Do you agree/disagree?
11 hours of sleep for a 5 year old?! Dude, I have a child in class that fall asleep a lot and when I mentioned it to the mom, she said she could never get to him to bed before 9pm, he just would not fall asleep. 9pm is like when *I* go to bed... that's like 8 or 9 hours of sleep that he's getting. And he's supposed to get 11 hours, and no nap.
ReplyDeleteI may need to show this chart to the parents.
Oh and yeah if your child is not a napper, I wouldn't force them. Maybe a little bit of quiet time, let's lay our head down and relax if she'll go for it, but not 2 hours of "you stay in your room and sleep damnit". Then again, I'm not a parent. When I am one, who knows what'll happen. "Go away, it's mommy's naptime!!"
Ari,
ReplyDeleteThat's why I shared the chart, because I don't think most parents have a clue how much sleep their child should be getting. I can't seem to get my 4 year old to sleep for 11.5 hours a day, though, no matter how early I send her to bed. She wakes up at the crack of dawn.
When I had one kid naptime wasn't all that important, but once I had two, mommy needed a break to get hammered, lmao, j/k!
