Ponyo Blu-Ray Review

If you're a fan of Japanese anime, you'll be super excited to know that Disney has taken some Japanese anime from legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli and added some famous voices to the mix.

Ponyo features the voices of Cate Blanchett, Noah Cyrus, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Frankie Jonas, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin and Betty White! This movie is a take on Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. It is a tale about a young boy named Sosuke who rescues Ponyo, a goldfish. Ponyo's father is a powerful sorcerer and does not like this friendship. He makes Ponyo return to the sea. This is devastating to the duo and Ponyo goes on a quest to become human so that she can reunite with Sosuke.

I thought the story was very cute, but I'm not a huge fan of anime, so that was a bummer. I was stoked about all the recognizable voices! It was a great combination. My daughter like the film, but it did not hold her attention the entire time.

The Blu-Ray features include an interactive experience called The World of Ghibli, along with a fun way to meet the characters and hear the story of the movie, discover the film's inspiration through documentaries and a disc introuduction with the producers. This set also includes a DVD.

Family Time Factor: Mostly enjoyed by kids 10 and under, I would say.

MOTR Grade: B-

Ponyo is now available on Blu-Ray and DVD!!!
