Raising the Bar: Complete First Season DVD Review

Did you wonder what Mark Paul Gosselar has been up to since NYPD Blue. If you're like me, you stay very interested in his career ever since he played Zack on Saved by the Bell! Well, wonder no more!

MPG has been playing a lawyer on the TNT original series Raising the Bar. He plays Jerry Kellerman, an idealistic public defender who actually cares about people and has grand illusions of saving the lowly, the sad, the underrepresented people of the world. Of course, there are obstacles in his path in doing so. For instance, the judge that he must present before is a very hardened and ambitious woman named Trudy Kessler (Jane Kaczmarek) and he is also having a fling with the prosecuting attorney which can occasionally make arguing with her quite difficult.

The characters are quirky, the plots are interesting and the acting is great! The show is even produced by Emmy winning Steven Bochco (Hill Street Blues, LA Law, NYPD Blue.) My only complaint is that the storylines can get a tad predictable, which leads to a lack of excitement in finishing the show. But, that happens quite often with scripted television!

If you're like me and had previously been unaware of the show, I was researching it and found this interesting: The series debut garnered 7.7 million viewers. It was the biggest audience ever for a new-series launch on basic cable. It beat the record set in 2004 by USA Network's launch of The 4400 which opened with an average of 7.4 million viewers; runner-up was TNT's The Closer, which recorded 7 million viewers when it was unveiled in 2005. Following the premiere, ratings evened out to around 5.5 million viewers per episode. (Source: Wikipedia)

Bonus features include bloopers and deleted scenes plus more!

Sounds like its doing great! The second season premiers on TNT June 8!

Family Time Factor: Not something young children would be interested, but definitely something that it is okay to watch with the rest of the family.

MOTR Grade: B

Raising the Bar: The Complete First Season is now available on DVD!!!
