Defiance DVD Review

Can I just say how much I don't like Nazis? It seems like lately there have been several WWII movies coming out (Valkyrie, Boy In The Striped Pajamas, etc.) and it just really makes me not like the Nazis even more.

Defiance is a movie about a group of brothers who lead some of their fellow Jews into hiding and keep them hiding out for the duration of WWII so they don't become victims like many of the other Jews did during the holocaust. They are the Bielski brothers. Daniel Craig stars as Tuvia, the oldest of the brothers and the leader of the pack. After their parents are murdered, they hide out in a forest and slowly start collecting more followers. It is a big job protecting so many and there are many tensions within the group. Liev Schreiber plays Zus, Tuvia's brother. He decides he wants to go and fight instead of just hiding out and "waiting to be killed." He joins up with an army of Russians and helps with the battle in that way.

For the most part, this movie was pretty good. I knew nothing about it going in and was pleasantly surprised that it was not bad! It was a little long and extremely sad and depressing (I mean, it's the Holocaust!) but it was actually based on a true story and it is a story that indeed deserved to be told!

Family Time Factor: Aside from the violence, there wasn't really anything inappropriate about this movie. I think it would be okay for any age to watch, but of course young kids would not be interested. I think the historical aspect makes it nice to watch with school age children (maybe 10 and up.)

MOTR Grade: A-

Defiance is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray!!!
